About this
- Available Locations: In-Person around Aotearoa, as well as online.
I initially created this as a Professional Development workshop opportunity for self-defence kaiako (teachers) working with Kia Haumaru. I then reached out to InternetNZ and Tech Users NZ (TUANZ) for some additional funding, and I repeated the workshop, but adapted for the TUANZ audience. I then repeated it again for kaiako (teachers) in schools with InternetNZ funding.
More recently, ECPAT Child Alert, has funded for it to run again, in-person in Ōtautahi (Christchurch) before adapting it for their new online school.
I’ll update this article again, when the online school version is live, but for now, enjoy the version for TUANZ, that has been recorded and uploaded to Youtube.

Deep Fakes, Generative AI & Pornography

As a personal safety instructor, a relationship & sex education facilitator, as well as a tech enthusiast… this session was born out of a new need to inform ourselves /how to keep our kids safe.
It felt like just a few years ago when we were dealing with the new idea of sending nudes to boyfriends, girlfriends and other intimate partners online, and warning our young people of the dangers of that. I’m not sure that message has fully sunk in yet, and now we are facing a whole new threat, and this time, through no fault at all of the young person at all.
Deep fake technology is easily accessible and in a lot of cases, completely free. Taking any image or video that exists, you can create video, imagery or audio of what sounds like a real version of the original material.
This can be used to amuse – imagine making a funny video of someone you don’t like falling over, but you can see how quickly that can descend into bullying.
This version was recorded when I ran this workshop as a webinar for TUANZ.
